As of today our website FTPEditor.com has been completely redesigned and rebuilt. The previous design has been in place since FTPEditor was launched back in 1999 and since then only minor changes where made. We added a – then-called – news section some years ago based on WordPress.

With the new layout we also got rid of some overhead. The new site has fewer pages and needs less click to get to the relevant places – for example to download FTPEditor.

For those of you interested, the new site is completely based on WordPress and uses these plugins:

Redirection – to keep all the old url running

SexyBookmarks – to add nice social media links to our blog posts

WPtouch iPhone Theme – for mobile visitors

WP Super Cache – to make things faster

WordPress.com Stats

and of course: Akismet

Please let us know how you like the new design.

In March 2009 FTPEditor will be available for ten years.

The very first version of FTPEditor was developed in March 1999 and was published around March 31st. Back then FTPEditor was ad-sponsored freeware – with a Pro version available which came with more features and no advertising.

In past years FTPEditor has gone through some changes: The ad-sponsoring has been dropped and lately we even stopped having two different versions of FTPEditor.
But the goal has always been the same and it will remain in the times to come:

Make FTPEditor an easy-to-use software tool to make editing files on a remote server as fast and smooth as possible.

To celebrate the anniversary we will have some special offers throughout the upcoming weeks. And we also would like you to join in. Let us know your story with FTPEditor: How did FTPEditor help you? What do you like? What would you like to see in future versions?

Happy FTPEditing…

It has been a while since we posted any information about our next version here. FTPEditor 4 is being developed for more than a year now. In between the project went into many different directions.

First we wanted to add more features to FTPEditor to make it a bigger more powerful tool. It took us a while to notice that more features is not the best way to go. Therefore we concentrated on making FTPEditor more stable and reliable. So we strengthened existing features – for example by bringing in a completely new FTP engine.

When we started to released the public preview version and watched the incoming feedback, we noticed that we were on the right track. Most users were not asking for more features – they were happy with the existing ones being faster, more usable and more reliable.

Having learned that lesson we decided to go even further into that direction. We even began skipping features (like the image html insertion and others). Some of the features we removed some others we just deactivated. So it will be the users voice bringing them back or not.

Finally we even skipped a complete version. Correct – with FTPEditor 4 we no longer will have FTPEditor and FTPEditor Pro. There will be just one FTPEditor from now on. Of course existing FTPEditor Pro users will still get all futures updates for free – as we promised back then.

Please let us know what you think about these changes. If you can’t wait until we finally release FTPEditor 4 please feel free to contact us a beta at ftpeditor.com to get a copy of the current preview version.

WinPlanet has published a review of FTPEditor called “Easing the Pain of Routine Web Edits“. In this article the author describes the advantages of FTPEditor over standard FTP clients and normal text editors.

It’s not at all uncommon to routinely make small changes to your Web pages in order to correct grammar or spelling mistakes or update sections of information. This process typically involves opening the file in an editing program where the mistake is corrected, but if the file isn’t on your hard drive or if others also work on the file, you’ll need to first download the file before editing it. After that, the file is uploaded by means of an FTP client.

The end result is a lot of time and work to make simple corrections or changes, but what if you were able to edit the files right on the server, using one program?

Besides that the article mentions another benefit of FTPEditor – its ease of use:

Using the program is a breeze. If you already have experience using FTP programs and text editors, you can use FTPEditor “right out of the box.”

There is only one point in which the tester missed a feature. The article mentions that when you want local copies of your files you would have to sync them manually. However – to create a local backup of files edited on a remote server just activate “Create local backup” in the SiteManager.
Seems we have to work on better advertising this feature.
Thanks to WinPlanet for the review.
