We are still here…

After a long and silent period, FTPEditor is coming with a completely new version. In FTPEditor 4 many parts have been completely reworked. FTPEditor got a new FTP engine under the hood, there is a new editor built in and the user interface has been improved.

With all that changes FTPEditor remains what it is: a simple, easy to use tool for editing files directly on the server.

Starting today we offer a beta preview version for those interested in what the new version will look like and how it works. It is not ready for production and not all features are in there yet.

After reading Nick Bradburys blog entry in which he mentions the Wikipedia articles of his software I was going to look if there would be an entry about FTPEditor as well.

I was really delighted to find an article about FTPEditor on Wikipedia. It is still a stub, so if anyone wants to add something, feel free to do so.

Testing FTPEditor in Microsofts Windows Vista (RC1) we found a problem with the help system.

This has been fixed in FTPEditor 3.3.1 which is available for download now.

Quite often we hear one and the same argument against direct editing on remote servers:

Modifications are only made on the remote server, but local versions do not reflect the changes resulting in different versions of files.

FTPEditor Pro addresses this issue by offering the feature “Create local backup” (see SiteManager documentation) which stores every remote modified file on the local computer as well. FTPEditor Pro therefore uses the “local directory” options specified in the SiteManager as storage folder.

WinPlanet has published a review of FTPEditor called “Easing the Pain of Routine Web Edits“. In this article the author describes the advantages of FTPEditor over standard FTP clients and normal text editors.

It’s not at all uncommon to routinely make small changes to your Web pages in order to correct grammar or spelling mistakes or update sections of information. This process typically involves opening the file in an editing program where the mistake is corrected, but if the file isn’t on your hard drive or if others also work on the file, you’ll need to first download the file before editing it. After that, the file is uploaded by means of an FTP client.

The end result is a lot of time and work to make simple corrections or changes, but what if you were able to edit the files right on the server, using one program?

Besides that the article mentions another benefit of FTPEditor - its ease of use:

Using the program is a breeze. If you already have experience using FTP programs and text editors, you can use FTPEditor “right out of the box.”

There is only one point in which the tester missed a feature. The article mentions that when you want local copies of your files you would have to sync them manually. However - to create a local backup of files edited on a remote server just activate “Create local backup” in the SiteManager.
Seems we have to work on better advertising this feature.
