Tip: Create local copies

Filed under:

Quite often we hear one and the same argument against direct editing on remote servers:

Modifications are only made on the remote server, but local versions do not reflect the changes resulting in different versions of files.

FTPEditor Pro addresses this issue by offering the feature “Create local backup” (see SiteManager documentation) which stores every remote modified file on the local computer as well. FTPEditor Pro therefore uses the “local directory” options specified in the SiteManager as storage folder.

Tip: How to use passive mode with FTPEditor

Filed under:

Users who want to use FTPEditor from behind corporate or personal firewalls often are having problems with establishing connections to ftp server.
Mostly using passive mode (a special feature in the FTP protocol) can be the solution for this.

To enter passive mode, set FTPEditor to use a proxy server in the Options Dialog, then switch on passive mode by checking the field. Now disable proxy server use again, if you don’t need it.

FTPEditor will now use passive mode with all connections.

Personal firewalls

Filed under:

In the past we got reports that when FTPEditor is started and connects to a server some personal firewalls (e.g. the one in Windows XP - SP2) repeatedly ask to confirm whether FTPEditor is allowed to make such connections.
Even if the users decided to allow this permanently, with the next start of FTPEditor the message would appear again.

Good news - this issue has been solved in FTPEditor 3.2.

Tip: Edit files on multiple servers simultaneously

Filed under:

In some occasions it might become necessary to edit files on multiple servers at the same time. To accomplish this you can activate the “allow multiple instances” feature in the Options dialog.
This will allow to launch FTPEditor several times. Each FTPEditor window then can be used to connect to a different server.
